INEJ would like to act their\u00a0advocacy and for their protection, and partner the new initiatives who are helping journalists cover climate change more effectively through training and technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key issues in environmental journalism<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Threats and violence:<\/strong>\u00a0Environmental journalists face significant risks, with reports from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/world-environment-day-rsf-and-leading-press-freedom-and-environmental-protection-organisations-call\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reporters sans fronti\u00e8res<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/article\/2024\/may\/02\/violent-attacks-against-environmental-journalists-on-the-rise-report-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>\u00a0noting that many are attacked, threatened, or killed for their work investigating issues like illegal mining, deforestation, and land exploitation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disinformation:<\/strong>\u00a0Journalists are fighting against the spread of climate and environmental disinformation, which is amplified through online platforms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shifting media landscape:<\/strong>\u00a0The industry is adapting to declining engagement with traditional media and a rise in social media, video, and online platforms, especially in countries in the Global South.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Access to information:<\/strong>\u00a0Obstacles include restrictions on journalists&#8217; access to certain territories and the pending freedom of information laws in some countries.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Initiatives and solutions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Advocacy for protection:<\/strong>\u00a0Organizations like Reporters sans fronti\u00e8res are actively highlighting cases and calling on governments to protect environmental journalists. A new declaration from COP30 aims to promote information integrity on climate change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Training and capacity building:<\/strong>\u00a0Groups like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/un-environment-supports-capacity-building-environmental-journalists-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/niemanreports.org\/climate-change-journalism-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oxford Climate Journalism Network<\/a>\u00a0offer training to improve climate literacy and provide resources for journalists, including on using technology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use of AI:<\/strong>\u00a0Artificial intelligence is being used to help analyze large datasets, such as satellite imagery, to identify environmental changes more efficiently, though potential biases in AI models are a concern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Solutions journalism:<\/strong>\u00a0Some journalists are shifting towards &#8220;solutions journalism&#8221; to provide stories about successful actions and inspire their audience to take action.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Environmental journalists face increasing threats, including violence and imprisonment, while also navigating the shift to digital media and combating climate disinformation.
